The END of the BEGINNING...........

Okay.....SO....here's the update!!
Thursday Carter starting running 103 fever (under the arm), and wouldn't eat or drink. We took him to his scheduled dermatologist appt, and he confirmed that Carter had erythema multiforme. We called his pediatrician who told us to go to the ER at Texas Children's (again). (and not because of our diagnosis, but b/c of the fever and his severe and worsening dehydration). SO...we get there and it's PACKED!! Anyway.....after about 5 hrs of waiting we see the ER doc who agrees with the Dermatologist, but wants an infectious disease Doc to come check him out. He decides to admit him to the hospital to get re-hydrated and some IV antibiotics. His concern was that with EM you typically get high fever when the rash develops, and Carter didn't get it until 4 days later...he was afraid that Carter had a secondary infection from the blisters. We get to the room at 4 am and I'm EXHAUSTED!! When we get up, we have to go to the pedi-derm at TCH. My kid has basically become a "lab rat"....because EM is so rare. I can't tell you how many doc's and students came to look at him, ask questions and take pics. Carter is doing fine, feeling much better, and the rash is healing. We got sent home with loads of meds and info. SOOOOO BASICALLY....he had superbonified allergic reaction to HSV (herpes simplex virus).....aka....a cold sore. Now we have to keep him on suppressive meds to prevent future cold sores. He has a likely chance of getting this again, and it's typically worse if you get it again (and would potentially be the full blown Stevens-Johnson Syndrome)
Now, I do have to say.....I told his pedi, and ER doc this is what he had, and neither would listen to me b/c it didn't fit every symptom.....if you EVER run into a situation where people don't know what you or your child have.....RESEARCH it!!! Don't give up!!! I called and got him the Derm appt because the ER Doc and his pedi had no idea (even though I told them). Just don't ever give up when your "gut instinct" says its something more......Doc's and nurses should give patients a little more credit!!
Here are a few pics of our little TCH ER/Admission adventure......Thank you ALL for your love and support!!!!
